Welcome to the 16th Infantry Regiment Association's Home Page. The 16th Infantry Regiment Association is a non-profit veteran's organization founded in fall of 1989. In April 1991, it received IRS recognition as a tax-exempt Veterans Organization under Section 501(c) (19) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its sole purpose is to perpetuate the history and heritage of the Regiment and to sponsor and support activities of the Regiment and the Society of the First Infantry Division. There are no paid employees. Volunteers provide all services and support activities.
Since its beginning it has grown from an original membership of five individuals to over 3000 members. Membership is open to anyone who served in the 16th Infantry Regiment during any period. Honorary Memberships are open to sons and daughters of former members of the regiment on a case by case basis. Widows of former members are offered a free membership.
The Association publishes a Quarterly Newsletter (Dagwood Dispatches), maintains a Regimental CP at the annual Society of the First Infantry Division's reunion and the annual First Infantry Division officers dinner. Additionally, it collects, maintains and displays regimental memorabilia at both the officer's dinner and the annual reunion. The Association also participates in the annual Distinguished Member of the Regiment Investiture Ceremony held at Fort Riley, Kansas as well as providing locator assistance to its members and their families. We have been successful in bring together individuals who haven't seen each other since the beaches of Normandy and the jungles of Vietnam. During the past two years with the help of other Cold War era members we have been especially successful in locating a significant number Cold War era members. For a complete listing of services go to our Regimental Activities and Services Section of the Home Page.
Most recently, we completed a fund raising drive to have written and published, a compete history of the Regiment from 1861 to 1996. This will be the most comprehensive and up to date history of the Regiment ever published. The book will go on sale at the year 2000 reunion. Every military historian should have a copy of this important work for his or her personal library. It would also make an excellent gift. Advance orders will be taken starting January 2000.
In 1987 the Association initiated a new program in support of our active duty battalion. Starting with the Christmas of 1998 the Association will be providing our active duty battalion with $1800 at Christmas to assist in providing food and gifts for soldiers of the battalion who might otherwise not have Christmas. This will be a reoccurring donation. The sad but true fact is that currently they are far too many American soldiers on food stamps. Your tax-deductible donations for this worthwhile program would be greatly appreciated.
Annual dues are $20.00. Our membership year runs from January to December.
If you served in the 16th Infantry Regiment during any period we would like to hear from you. We would also like to get the names and addresses of other individuals with whom you might still be in contact. We would also appreciate receiving copies of orders containing Social Security Numbers. We have found them to be very helpful in our search for former members and for our locator assistance program. For more information contact us at: <gkgpag@msn.com>
We hope you enjoy our Home Page. Be sure to sign-in in our Regimental Guest Book and let us know what you think of our Home Page. There is always room for improvement.
